Students enjoy floriculture kind of life

Written by Emily Leissa, Correspondent

In high school, there are many electives students can take for their personal interest or for fun, but, many would have ever thought that making flower arrangements would be one of them.

At Newton High, the Agriculture Department offers many classes that focus on the agricultural way of life; including floral design. From making floral arrangements, to learning what different plants are, the floriculture way of life is experienced through the classroom. Twenty-six students are in the Floral Design class and Justin Bennett is the instructor.

One of the ways these students make their grade is by making floral arrangements called Flower of the Month to sell to the teachers.

“Flower of the Month gives the students a hand on practice in the floral industry. The students create a design all the way from start to finish,” Bennett said.

Junior Heidy Del Valle and junior Brittany Moore are in the floral design class and they say love the class and they have learned a lot.

“I learned how to put flowers together in an arrangement and how to make bows for the arrangement,” Del Valle said.

Contrary to what one may believe, the flower of the month is not a fundraiser for the Future Farmers of America club. Instead, the money that is collected from the teachers is used to fund things needed for the class. According to Bennett, most of it is reinvested into the green house for supplies and materials.

The students in the class did not all choose to have to take the elective and some were just put in there to fill their opening spot. Junior Brittany Moore said that she didn’t choose the class, and that she got put into it but she really glad she did.

However, Del Valle said that she chose the course and that she loves being able to work with plants and flowers.

With so many flowers it is hard to know which ones are to be used for the Flower of the Month and which ones shouldn’t be used.

Bennett said that Flower of the Month varies by month, and sometimes they are seasonal and for December the class grew poinsettias and that it would be the flower of the month.

Moore said it takes about usually two to three days to fully make an arrangement.

“I didn’t know how to make an arrangement before this class or anything about flowers really,” Moore said.
