Boxer Griffin knocking out his competition

Written by Nikia McCall, Correspondent

Weighting in at 174 pounds and standing 5’8’ tall, senior Marquiss Griffin seems to be the ultimate knock-out threat when it comes to his specialty: boxing.

Before Griffin realized he would be so good in boxing, he played football. He enjoyed football but once he began boxing at 16, he has not stopped.

“I want to be the best; when I am tired, I always motivate myself to just keep going,” Griffin said.

Not every boxer gets a reputation of a “beast” like the three-year veteran has. In Griffin’s very first match, he won by knock-out, and unlike football, there is no foul on complimenting yourself on a good job.

He said that he started to get well-known over the summer at the state Olympics when he won a silver medal; then, he felt like “anything is possible.”

For Griffin, working out is like a necessity to life. He practices at the MMA boxing gym off of hwy138 in Conyers. His workout plan consists of running, which helps speed, jump roping, which adds a “greater bounce” in his step and steadies the heart rate.

Lifting weights makes his punches more powerful, and what looks to be the best part of his workout, the punching bag, helps give him a better aim on the opponent.

Being that he is such a talented boxer, he also trains the younger, upcoming boxers in the gym.

While practicing, Griffin and his team also travel to boxing matches. Even though many of the boxing matches he attends are in the state of GA, he enjoys tagging along with the team to support his teammates.

Griffin said that when you are boxing, you have to learn how to block out all of the noise surrounding you and focus only on what your coach is telling you.

“When I am boxing it is always really loud, some people boo me and some people cheer me on; it all depends, but the most important thing that I try to listen on is the advice my coach is giving me,” Griffin said.

To be a good boxer, he said having a positive attitude, having the ability to work hard, and to never give up, most importantly all are important qualities.

“I want to make something of myself, boxing inspires me to do so much,” Griffin said.

Griffin said he tries setting a good example for the younger boxers in the gym as well as trying to set good examples for everyone around him, including his younger brother who wants to one day box just as good at him.
